Dismantling operation of a bridge in Val D'Aosta!
A challenging bridge dismantling operation was successfully completed in Valle d'Aosta with the combined use of a Demag AC 500-2 and a Liebherr LTM 1400-7.1, working in an extremely confined area with almost no maneuvering space available.
The project involved the removal of an existing bailey bridge through a carefully planned sequence of tandem lift operations. The first span of the bridge was lifted simultaneously by both mobile cranes, shifted laterally and temporarily positioned on the opposite side of the work area while one mobile crane remained partially under load to ensure stability throughout the operation. Once the structure was safely repositioned, the road section was disconnected from the remaining components of the bridge, allowing the dismantling activities to continue step by step.
The mobile cranes were then reconfigured to occupy the longest section of the bridge, which was carefully relocated and positioned on the new bridge structure. As the operation progressed, the bridge was gradually separated into lighter sections in order to optimize handling and maintain full control during each stage of the dismantling process.
One of the most complicated moments involved the mobile crane positioned directly against the mountainside, lifting the largest section of the bridge, rotating it within the confined working area and carefully positioning it in front of the vehicle. The remaining sections, after being temporarily placed on the new bridge, were subsequently dismantled separately.
A dismantling operation where lifting precision, coordination and engineering expertise were essential to safely manage every movement within such a challenging alpine environment.
