108-Ton Pedestrian Bridge Successfully Transported and Installed at Milan Linate Airport
Operating within an international airport requires exceptional planning, engineering expertise and flawless execution. Every activity must be carefully coordinated to meet strict operational procedures while ensuring that airport operations remain unaffected.
Autovictor was responsible for transporting and installing the main steel structure of the new pedestrian bridge connecting the P4 parking area with the M4 metro station and the passenger terminal at Milan Linate Airport.
The bridge, measuring more than 70 metres in length and weighing 108 tonnes, was fully assembled on site before being transported and lifted into its final position.
The transportation was carried out using two 6-axle Self-Propelled Modular Transporters (SPMTs), providing accurate load distribution and exceptional manoeuvrability throughout the operation.
Once positioned, the bridge was lifted and installed through a tandem lift performed by two high-capacity all-terrain cranes:
- Liebherr LTM 1400-7.1
- Demag AC 500-2
The tandem operation required continuous synchronization between both cranes to ensure correct load sharing, structural stability and precise alignment throughout the lifting sequence.
Following months of engineering studies, logistical planning and operational coordination, the bridge was accurately positioned onto its reinforced concrete supports during a carefully scheduled overnight operational window.
Working in close proximity to the airport runway demanded meticulous planning, strict compliance with airport regulations and seamless coordination between all project stakeholders.
