Dismantling of the Ponte dell’Industria over the Tiber River (Rome)
Between November and December 2024, Autovictor took part in the delicate dismantling operation of the Ponte dell’Industria in Rome, a historic steel bridge crossing the Tiber River, consisting of three spans with an overall length of approximately 131 meters. The operation required meticulous technical and logistical planning, as the bridge is a historic structure located within a particularly complex urban environment characterized by extremely limited working space.
The activities involved the handling and removal of two steel arch spans weighing approximately 85 ton each, together with the central lattice span weighing approximately 35 ton. The operation was primarily carried out using a Terex-Demag TC2800-1 lattice boom crawler crane, supported by a 100-tonne service crane and a Socage ForSte 54TJJ aerial work platform, which was utilized for access and assistance operations at height.
The site configuration represented one of the major challenges of the entire project. Following the removal of the first steel arch and the central span, it became necessary to completely dismantle the Terex-Demag TC2800-1 and subsequently reassemble it on the opposite bank of the Tiber River in order to proceed with the removal of the final bridge section. This phase proved particularly complex, both from a logistical standpoint and in terms of managing urban interferences and operational constraints within the work area.
The project required a highly engineered approach, particularly in the management of lifts involving asymmetric loads, long-radius crane configurations, and the optimization of maneuvering space for the main crane. Every phase was developed through detailed preliminary analyses, dedicated lifting plans, and continuous coordination among operational crews, engineers, and site supervisors.
From an HSE perspective, the project was executed in accordance with the highest safety standards, with particular attention devoted to risk management during non-standard lifting operations and activities performed near the river and existing urban infrastructure. The synergy between advanced planning, operational expertise, and continuous activity monitoring enabled the dismantling work to be completed under conditions of maximum safety and operational efficiency.
